Dr Monty Soutar is the fellow in Māori History with the History Group of the Ministry for Culture and Heritage. In January 2006 he took up a new appointment as director of the Tairawhiti Museum. He is a member of the Historic Places Māori Council, and of the Awards in Oral History Board for the History Group, Ministry of Culture and Heritage. Dr Soutar has been a member of the Māori Advisory Board for the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography, a member of the National Archives reference group, and Te Papa's reference group on biculturalism. He has significant experience in historical research, vast experience in dealing with Māori Land Court records and has worked widely with iwi and Māori communities.
