Dr Angela Ballara is recognised as one of the foremost academic authorities on Māori customary history. In a career spanning more than 30 years, Dr Ballara has written three books, two theses and contributed to numerous published works. She has written papers for the Journal of the Polynesian Society, and the New Zealand Journal of History and is a member of the team responsible for producing the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography and Nga Tangata Taumata Rau. Dr Ballara has had particular responsibility for the Māori side to this project. - Taua: ‘musket wars’, ‘land wars’ or tikanga? - Warfare in Māori society in the early nineteenth century (2003); -Iwi: the dynamics of Māori tribal organisation, c1769-c1945 (1998) and -Proud to be white? A study of racial prejudice in New Zealand (1986). Her academic qualifications include a PhD, History, Victoria University of Wellington, 1992; MA History, Auckland University, 1973; COP Māori Studies, Auckland University, 1981; BA, History, Auckland University, 1969. Dr Angela Ballara was appointed to the Waitangi Tribunal in 2004.
