Māori Land Court Judges

Part of the jurisdiction of Māori Land Court judges is the capacity to be appointed as presiding officers for Waitangi Tribunal inquiries.  Several Māori Land Court judges are currently acting in this capacity.  The Chairperson  of the Tribunal is currently the Chief Judge of the Māori Land Court, Joe Williams.

The Māori Land Court (Te Kooti Whenua Māori) is the New Zealand court that hears matters relating to Māori land. About 1.3 million hectares in New Zealand is designated as Māori freehold land, just under five percent of the total 26.4 million hectares in the country.
